Prescriptions

Ordering repeat prescriptions

There are several ways in which to order a repeat prescription.

To order:
  • Using the online form
  • By arrangement with a local pharmacy.
  • In writing: please use the printed request slip; the detachable right hand side of your prescription. This can be either handed into the Practice, or sent through the post.

We do not take repeat prescription requests over the phone.

Please remember to order your repeat prescriptions in plenty of time so that they can be safely processed by the practice and then by your pharmacist. We suggest a minimum of 4 working days before you need your new medication.

Repeat prescriptions can be issued in one of two ways. Either, as a conventional repeat where they have to be regularly ordered, mostly every 8 weeks albeit there are some exceptions. Alternatively, there is a serial repeat system whereby you receive a script for one year and your pharmacist dispenses it directly to you every 8 weeks over a one year period, thus avoiding having to first request the script each time. This can offer greater convenience & works well for stable repeats though one has to commit to using the same pharmacy

Collecting your prescription

You can usually collect your prescription from the pharmacy 4 working days after you have ordered it.

You can collect your prescription from Balmullo Surgery or a nominated pharmacy. You will need to choose a pharmacy to collect your prescription from.

  • at your GP practice
  • at any pharmacy that accepts repeat prescriptions
    - Rowlands Newport or Tayport
    - Leuchars Pharmacy

Questions about your prescription

If you have questions about your medicine, your local pharmacists can answer these. They can also answer questions on medicines you can buy without a prescription.

The NHS website has information on how your medicine works, how and when to take it, possible side effects and answers to your common questions.

If you would like to speak to someone at the GP surgery about your prescription:

  • phone after 10am on 01334 871164 (Balmullo) or 01334 839210 (Leuchars)

Medication reviews

If you have a repeat prescription(s), we may need to arrange to review it with you either by phone or in person. You will be contacted where this is required. Conversely, should you need to discuss your prescription(s), then you may request this. Usually, this will be with our Pharmacy team, but of course sometimes it needs to be with the initiator of the prescription.

What to do with old medicines

Take it to the pharmacy you received it from so that it may be appropriately disposed of safely and within current environmental requirements.
Please do not bring it to the surgery, put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet.
